NOMINATION & JURY COMMENTS:
RAINTAP | STUDIO FLORIS SCHOONDERBEEK
‘The Raintap by Studio Floris Schoonderbeek applies a beautiful design that makes smart use of what is already there, in this case the rain pipe.’
The Raintap upgrades the standard water butt. Not only does it capture rainwater, but it also encourages its use. The tap, foot pump and wash basin transform the water butt into a water station or even a compact outdoor kitchen. The Raintap turns the convenient collection, storage and use of rainwater into part of the daily routine. It can be used at home when watering the plants, cleaning gardening equipment or rinsing the fresh (vegetable) harvest, and at events as a mobile hand washing station. The Raintap, designed by Floris Schoonderbeek and made from recycled plastic by waste processor SUEZ, is produced in the Netherlands.
The Raintap is not only a water butt with added functionality, but also taps into an awareness of climate adaptation. The Raintap makes the road to becoming rainproof more accessible for consumers and, as such, encourages us to think more carefully about flooding and rainwater collection. Studio Floris Schoonderbeek does this in its own characteristic way: with a beautiful design that makes smart use of what is already there, in this case the rain pipe. The little tap is a simple intervention that upgrades the whole experience and use of the water butt, so that you can use it in all kinds of new ways.
